Simply hang out
When you set out with the aim of making the best ham in the world, it's no wonder why sooner or later you switch on Mozart, sea salt and Folke Tegetthoff. In rural Auersbach, the Vulcano pigs smile at you and even tell you their story. The pork knuckle greets guests from afar in the modern gourmet manufactory, which was created around the famous Vulcano ham. Thanks to a spirit of innovation and a great deal of courage, this East Styrian product now joins the ranks of San Daniele, Serrano and the rest. But it's not just the ham that enchants the palate and soul, salami, truffle fillet and fruit wrapped in bacon also work wonders.
Socket noses
Before there can be a raw ham matured with juniper, coriander, rosemary and sea salt, there is first the pig. And that has fallen on the butter side of the pig world in Auersbach, because Franz Habel plays Mozart and rock music to his protégés with just as much enthusiasm as he feeds them the best feed made from rye, barley, wheat and maize. And as they no longer have to fear lava in the thermal spa and volcano region of Styria, the little and big plug noses feel right at home.
Vulcano adventure tour
The intro to every tour is provided by Vulcana, Vulcano's parade pig. The story comes from Folke Tegetthoff. There are several stations where you can gain a deeper insight into the breeding, rearing and feeding of the pig breeds. Once you arrive in the pigsty, you immediately realise that the pigs literally feel at home here. After the ‘Speisekastl’ and the sensory room, you arrive at the ham bar - truly the highlight of the tour. A love of meat meets wine culture here.
The annual highlight at Vulcano is undoubtedly the International Ham Culinary. For years now, countless ham lovers have taken the opportunity to sample the best hams in the world.
