Through the Bärenschützklamm up to the Hochlantsch (and forward to the Teichalm)

Closed
The Bärenschützklamm will open on September 22, 2024. Walk through one of the most beautiful gorges in Austria up to one of the highest peaks in the mountain landscape around Graz, and continue to the idyllic Teichalm (alpine meadow) with the Teichalmsee (lake) and back down to Mixnitz.

The Bärenschützklamm (gorge) is one of the most beautiful rock gorges in Austria. Hiking between untamed waterfalls and craggy rocks is a lasting experience: 109 bridges and 51 wooden ladders are needed to overcome the height of 350 m with an ascent of 1.4 kilometres.

The Bärenschützklamm (gorge) is made available by the forest management business Franz Mayr-Melnhofm and is tended to by the Alpenverein Sektion Mixnitz (Alpine Association, Mixnitz Section) – for which we extend our grateful thanks!

From the Hans Kerl-Hütte (hut), the path now leads through the Bärenschützklamm (gorge). The ravine is delimited by 300 metre-high limestone walls, into which the Mixnitzbach (stream) has eaten its way over the centuries to form this unique gorge. 164 bridges and ladders with a total of 2500 wooden rungs have been applied with great effort, so that this natural monument can also be experienced by mountain hikers who are steady on their feet. After the refuge shelter, you will reach the large waterfall with a drop height of approx. 50 metres. During the steep ascent, the gorge looks truly romantic; you wander over waterfalls, slip past projecting rocks and cross the bubbling Mixnitz stream multiple times. After the ÖAV-Diensthütte (service hut) follows a no-less romantic, but less wild section. After crossing the stream for the last time, you ascend a steep slope to the gorge exit and then continue on a forest path to the “Guten Hirten” – a welcome opportunity to rest.

The Bärenschützklamm (gorge) is open from 1st May to 31st October, daily from 7:30 to 16:00 hrs.

No registration required!

The refreshment stations "Zum guten Hirten" and the "Steirische Jockl" are open from the beginning of May to the end of October.

It is not possible to take your dogs on this hike!

The return journey does not lead through the gorge, but rather via the so-called "Prügelweg" (path): Path no. 746 from the Gasthof "Zum guten Hirten" (restaurant)

A path maintenance fee is charged at the gorge entrance (Hans Kerl-hut), the path maintenance is undertaken by the ÖAV-Sektion Mixnitz (Alpine Association, Mixnitz Section)

More information

From the starting point at the car park for the Bärenschützklamm (gorge) near Mixnitz (municipality of Pernegg), you walk approx. 1 1/2 hours on the wide hiking path 702/745, up the hill to the cascade waterfall and then continue through the ravine-like valley to the Hans Kerl-Hütte (hut), the “Kassierhütte” (Cashier’s hut). Shortly prior to this, the “Prügelweg” (path) (No. 746) will turn off to the left – which is actually the return path down from the “Guten Hirten" (inn) or an easier ascent via the Schwaigeralm (alpine meadow) to the “Guten Hirten”.

After a further half an hour’s ascent, you will reach the "Steirische Jockl" (inn). Go down some steps to the picturesque little pilgrimage church "Schüsserlbrunn", which hugs the rock wall. The last ascent is steep and leads up to the Hochlantsch peak, which is the highest projection in the mountain landscape of Graz at 1720 m above sea level. Enjoy the wonderful view!

From the Hochlantsch peak, the path now leads (approx. 1.5 hours) down to the Teichalmsee (lake) with the Teichalm moor. Before returning, it is possible to take a refreshment stop at the Gasthöfen (restaurants) at the lake.

The return journey now leads along the Mixnitzbach (stream) and without substantial further upward gradients to the "Zum Guten Hirten" (inn) (approx. 1 hour). It is possible on the way down to avoid the gorge using the so-called "Prügelweg" (path) to the Hans Kerl-Hütte (hut) before continuing on the same route as before back to the car park.
