One hut, two names and lots of views
Nature lovers of all kinds get together at the weekends. Then they hike to the cosy Naturefriends' Hut in the Gesäuse for a snack and take a look at Palfau from above.
The Naturfreundehütte (also called Bergbauern-Lackneralm) is located at 1,020 metres above sea level. If you want to get there, you start in Palfau at the Bergbauer homestead. The trail with the number 283 is the destination and the hut is reached after an hour's walk. It is actually a rustic self-catering hut with a mattress dormitory for 16 people, but on weekends from mid-May to October it becomes a stopover for hikers and nature lovers.
Doing laps
The hut is particularly popular because of the eagerly awaited ascent to the Gamsstein at 1,774 metres, for which you should allow an hour and a half from the hut. A circular hiking trail is also tempting. It is possible to walk from Palfau via the Naturefriends' Hut, the Gamsstein and the Moaralm back to Palfau in six hours and to admire one or two natural beauties in the meantime.
Good views
Bikers on the Buchsteinrunde are also pleased with the location of the hut and the view of the Salzatal valley and the Gesäuse mountains. They greet you from all sides and a friendly "Griaß di" back never hurt anyone. But someone else wants to be noticed. The Hochschwab is also clearly visible. High above Palfau at the cosy hut, all is still right with the world.
