Saint Benedict already charged his brothers with special care for the sick and infirm.
"Care for the sick must come before and above everything!" So it should hardly come as a surprise that the Admont Abbey Pharmacy also looks back on a long tradition in which people and their health are at the centre. Shortly after the foundation of the monastery in 1074, old writings trace the existence of a monastic medicine cabinet, which from the 15th century onwards also served the general population. In the years that followed, secular doctors and pharmacists found employment both in front of and behind the monastery walls.
As the first woman in the almost thousand-year history of the monastery pharmacy, Mag. Pharm. Andrea Pickl took over her father's lease in 2018. Under her guidance, the pharmacy's mission statement of "tradition and innovation" also lives on.
