Stross circuit, Gschaid/Weiz

The short loop up to the Stross and then back to Gschaid is a nice hike between Weiz and the Sattelberge mountains in Eastern Styria.
The Stross, 1,033 meters high, is a rather inconspicuous cone a few kilometers outside of Weiz. Its striking location between the plain of the Raab valley, the mountains to the north of Weiz and the Schöckel to the south makes it a beautiful panoramic mountain, even if the summit cross is in the middle of the forest.

The somewhat steeper ascent up to the summit leads through a beautiful mixed forest, after a rest at the nicely designed summit cross, the trail descends comfortably to the Hochwarter Kreuz. The rest of the route leads around the mountain back to Gschaid, but now with great views of the Weiz and Graz mountains and back to Weiz.

Via the "Gschaid" district, the Stross loop can be easily combined with the various tours along the Sattelberge and to the Gösserwand to form a proper hike:

Gösser & Sattelberge

Naas cave trail

The trail is easy to walk, the ascent to the summit is not too long.

  • Immediately at the farmstead, we turn sharp left and continue along the meadow path. On the right we can now see the Wolfsattel with the quarry.

  • We now reach the road and continue uphill on the left until we reach the village of "Gschaid".

  • At the bus/SAM stop we turn left downhill and continue in the direction of "Dürntal/Passail", on the right we see the Sattelberge and behind it the Schöckl with the transmitter.

  • After about 500 meters we reach our starting point again.

For a refreshment stop, we recommend the "Dürntalwirt" down on the Gösserweg or the restaurants in Weiz.
