Reinischwirt - Reinischkogel - circular route

On a stretch of four kilometres, a fairly leisurely walk awaits you on this loop. The summit cross at the top of the Reinischkogel rewards you for the ascent.
The Reinischkogel is a 1463-metre-high mountain on the Koralpe in the Lavanttal Alps, in the picturesque landscape of the Schilcherheimat region of western Styria. Its name is derived from the fact that extensive estates and farms north of it belonged to the Rein monastery in the Middle Ages and the mountain formed their southern border.

From the starting point of the hike, the Reinischwirt, which is unfortunately currently closed, up to the summit cross on the Reinischkogel, you cover 280 metres in altitude.

The summit cross, the highlight of the circular hike, stands on a rock that you absolutely must climb to take the obligatory summit photo. There you also have the best opportunity to fortify yourself with a typical West Styrian snack that you have brought with you.

The way back to the Reinischwirt then runs comfortably downhill across flowering meadows. Here you can relax at a brisk pace and recover from the somewhat steeper stretch up to the Reinischkogel.

More information

Plan your journey via Google Maps to the starting point of the tour: www.google.at/maps

Coming from Stainz: Engelweingartenstraße - Salleggerstraße - Reinischwirt (approx. 21km).

Coming from Deutschlandsberg: Hebalmlandesstraße and at the beginning of Kloster - St. Oswald turn right to Reinischwirt (approx. 22.5km).

Coming from Carinthia: Hebalmlandestraße, at the end of Kloster - St. Oswald turn left to Reinischwirt.

You start your circular hike at the Reinischwirt. Here you can leave your car and get involved in the unique area of the Reinischkogel. Follow the circular trail marked 23, which takes you up a somewhat steeper path through the forest to the summit cross. The sun's rays penetrating through the dense leaves in summer draw beautiful patterns on the forest floor and it is wonderfully cool in the shade. This trail is a special experience in autumn, when the leaves glow in bright colours all around. Enjoy the wonderful scent of the forest and watch the birds living there for a while. You might even spot a pheasant or two.

The summit cross on the Reinischkogel stands at 1463 metres above sea level. It owes its firm stand to a rock that lies at its base. Here you can recover perfectly from the ascent and recharge your batteries. Don't forget to sign the summit book with a funny hiker's saying. The hikers after you will also appreciate a good joke.

On the right, at the summit cross, you will immediately meet the hiking trail with trail number 551. Follow this until you meet the forest trail from Schrogentor, with number 569. This leads you to the right along the leisurely downhill fort road back to the Reinischwirt, which you will reach again after about one hour and 45 minutes.

You should end the hiking day well relaxed in one of the outstanding restaurants on the Reinischkogel. Visit the forest pigs at the Jagawirt or the impressive red deer at the Wassermann inn.

Summit cross on the Reinischkogel: It is enthroned on a rock above Bad Gams, the summit cross on the Reinischkogel. It is probably the perfect motif for the souvenir photo of this tour.
