Der Eiserne Brunnen am Brucker Hauptplatz

Bruck an der Mur

With its arbor built entirely in the Renaissance tradition, the Iron Fountain is one of the most important wrought iron works in Styria.

From the 12th century onwards, the iron fountain saved the population of Bruck, who did not have their own water supply, from going down to the banks of the Mur. After the well was built, there was also fresh water from the Mur in the center of Bruck, as the well reached the groundwater level of the river.

The fountain arbor from 1626 is decorated with spindle flowers and wrought iron tendrils. A small figure, Saint George, was placed on top. In addition, there is a surrounding grille from 1693 and a flywheel from 1883 on the parapet. The inscriptions on the fountain not only tell you that it was made in 1626, but also tell you about the preferences of the Bruck stonemason, Hanns Prasser:

"I am Hanns Prasser Better drink wine than water I would like to drink the water as wine So I proclaim that I am a richer man. "

Since the beginning of the 17th century it has stood as a landmark in a prominent position on the city's main square. With 13,000 m², the main square is the second largest inner city square in Austria. Today the fountain is no longer used, but is a shining attraction for the people of Bruck, especially at night.
