The Bretstein subcamp in Pölstal was the first subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp in this region and was set up for road construction and agricultural work.
Bretstein Subcamp was a subcamp of Mauthausen Concentration Camp. It was established in the spring of 1944 and was the first subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp in Styria.
The main purpose of the camp was to provide forced laborers for road construction and agricultural work in the region. The prisoners, mostly political prisoners and prisoners of war, had to work and live under harsh conditions. The camp only existed for a short time and was disbanded in the fall of 1944. Today, a memorial plaque at this site commemorates the victims and reminds us of the atrocities.
Opening hours: The memorial is freely accessible to all.
