The church stands on the 1,586m high old pass road above the Gleinalm saddle on the Gleinalpe, at the foot of the Speikkogel, near the Gleinalmschutzhaus.
The sanctuary was consecrated in 1711. After a lightning strike in 2004, it burned down to the foundation walls, but was restored and rebuilt with great attention to detail the following year. The fact that the altar was spared from fire can be considered a small mountain miracle.
The Schutzhaus tenants are really happy with 'their' small church and take care of it with joy. In summer, the anteroom of the church is always open during the day and is a place of reflection and devotion for all people. They also smoke incense regularly and refill the holy water so that every visitor can devote himself to prayer and silence. There are always hikers who are surprised to find such a treasure far away, and occasionally groups of pilgrims with priests come, who really appreciate this church.
