St. Peter ob Judenburg

Beautiful church worth seeing

In 1156/64 the high rich Wichard von Strondorf donated the foundation of St. Peter near Judenburg "in Carinthia sito" to the monastery of Heiligenkreuz.

In 1210 the papal confirmation of the possession of Heiligenkreuz "Possessio apud S. Petrum in Carinthia" took place.

In 1218 the first pastor, Hertnidus de sancto Petro, is mentioned. At the end of the Middle Ages (about 1450) St. Peter was already one of the "main parishes" of the upper Mur valley.

In 1774 the Judenburg sculptor Johann Nischlwitzer created the fisherman's pulpit, one of the few in Austria. In the course of church restoration, ceiling frescoes depicting the 12 apostles were discovered. The west-east oriented nave is flanked by the approximately 43 m high onion tower.

Around the church lies the cemetery with the stately tombs of the hammer lords from the Möschitz and Feistritz ditches. Since 1999 it has been supplemented by a new cemetery at the foot of the "Pfarrer Dicktl" with a stylish cross.
