Schaubergwerk Museum Oberzeiring
PölstalThe show mine in Oberzeiring is a significant cultural monument that provides deep insight into the rich history of silver mining in Styria.
The show mine in Oberzeiring offers a fascinating insight into the rich history of silver mining in Styria. Silver mining in this area can be traced back to around 1000 BC. The first documented mention of the mine dates back to the year 1267. In the Middle Ages, Oberzeiring was known for its significant silver mine, which was one of the oldest and largest in the Eastern Alps.
Mining played a significant role in the upswing of Styria, but it ended at the latest in the 1370s. A legend tells of a catastrophic water ingress that supposedly "flooded" the mine. Today, visitors can walk through the old tunnels and see ceramic vessels, miner's lamps, and minerals in the museum. The show mine is a unique testament to medieval mining and was awarded the Austrian Museum Quality Seal in 2018.
