Snowshoe hike Steinplan from Rösslergraben

A beautiful and less frequented tour via the Rösslergraben to the Steinplan in the Murtal adventure region.
The Steinplan in the Murtal adventure region can without a doubt be called Knittelfeld's local mountain. If in summer it is mountain bikers and hikers, in winter tourers, winter hikers and snowshoe hikers storm this "avalanche-proof" peak. Many paths lead to the Steinplan, whereby this variant from the Rösslergraben is to be counted among the quieter tours. The entire path is sparsely marked and so a good sense of direction is required. Arrived at the Steinplan, at least a warm winter room awaits us with the shelter and, if the nature friend house is open, also the possibility to make ourselves comfortable in the guest room with good hospitality. Those who have taken a liking to this peak can still take a look at the second snowshoe variant from Kleinlobming. The sunny side is a popular hike and just as highly recommended as the good homey inns in the community Lobmingtal...

By car for snowshoeing - a few things to watch out for!

  • Good winter tires are an absolute MUST!
  • Ice scraper, snow broom, de-icer for the door locks and a small shovel are part of the basic equipment.
  • Put snow chains and a tow rope in the car, even if you are not good with them yourself. Helping and knowledgeable hikers are always available on the mountain!
  • Clear the car completely of snow and ice, especially sweep off the roof of the car completely. When parking, make sure you leave room for other motorists.
  • Always park so that the rest of the roadway remains clear for cars, logging trucks, and snow removal vehicles.
  • Find out about the snow situation on the access road or parking facilities before setting off. (hut host, webcams)
We use one of the few parking possibilities in the Rösslergraben (1), 1042 m, as starting point for our hike. On the forest road we go to the Watzenbacherhütte (2), 1242 m. At the next junction we turn right and walk past the house Rachau No. 252 until we reach a clearing with a solitary beech tree and shortly after we see a marker, although it should be noted that the entire trail is unfortunately poorly marked. On the forest road we reach the Jostbauerhütte (3), 1361 m. Passing the homestead we continue until we reach a spring with a well. Now we follow the signs to the Steinplan refuge (4), 1670 m, and the summit with the summit cross right next to it. The descent is - apart from some shortcuts - the same as the ascent route.
This tour is little marked, so the GPX track is very helpful, especially when there are no or few tracks after fresh snow.
There is no public transport connection to the starting point of the tour.
