Tonion alpine pasture hike

Adventurous hike from Niederalpl to Tonion and via Fallenstein and Lieglergraben back to Niederalpl.
Leisurely alpine hike up to Herrenboden, then somewhat more strenuous to the summit of the Tonion - the whole round requires good physical condition!

Coming from Mariazell on the B20 to Wegscheid, turn left in the direction of Mürzzuschlag and drive to the pass Niederalpl.

You can view the exact route  here!

We hike from the top of the pass on the long-distance trail 405 via Wetterinalm (Sennhütte) and Weißalm (Sennhütte) further to Herrenboden - here we can also stop at the Sennhütte. At the end of the alpine pasture we climb to the summit of the Tonion, 1429m, and enjoy the magnificent summit panorama from the Wienerwald (east) to the Gesäuse and Tote Gebirge (west).

On the descent via the Tonionalm (nature lovers' hut) and Langboden we reach Fallenstein - here we can get on the 172 line and return to Niederalpl.

However, if you still want to continue the hike, you can return to the Wetterinalm via Lieglergraben and Molterboden - from here it is not far to the starting point.

Walking times:   

Niederalpl - Herrenboden: 2 hours   

Herrenboden - Tonion summit: 1 hour   

Tonion summit - Fallenstein: 2.5 hours   

Fallenstein - Niederalpl via Lieglergraben: 2.5 hours

Rustic, catered alpine huts to stop at along the hike.

The call bus operates from 1 May to 26 October on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays as well as on Thursdays and Fridays during the summer holidays.
