Hochalm day

As every year, Holy Mass is held in the Maria Schnee pilgrimage church on the Hochalm. The church, which was consecrated in 1660, is a popular excursion destination in both summer and winter. It is located at 1,880 metres above sea level in the Seckau Alps. Marian devotion on the Hochalm began at the beginning of the 18th century. The Hochalm Mother of God statue is located here in the summer months. To this day, thousands make pilgrimages to the Hochalm, where pilgrimage services are held every year. During the Corpus Christi procession, the statue of the Hochalm Mother of God, decorated with flowers, is carried through the village. During the winter months, the statue is kept in Seckau. Only in spring is it carried together to the Hochalm. The name Maria Schnee is said to be inspired by the legend of the founding of the Roman basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, according to which fresh snow is said to have signalled the location of the church building on the Esquiline Hill in Rome in the year 358. The little church was renovated to mark its 300th anniversary. The summit cross of the Hochalm is just a few metres away. From here, you not only have a marvellous view of the Mur Valley, but also of the Eisenerz Alps and the Hochschwab region.
