Mariazell country round walk

Beautiful, not too difficult circular trail through the Mariazeller Land, where we also pass the Erlaufsee!
The Mariazell circular hiking trail leads us on an easy footpath through the Grünau, past the Marienwasserfall, to the Erlaufsee and back to Mariazell.

In the Erlaufsee we can of course take a refreshing bath on hot summer days before we hike the last kilometers to Mariazell. If we prefer to cover the last part comfortably, we take the museum tramway that leads from Lake Erlaufsee to St. Sebastian. In faithfully restored wagons and locomotives (including the oldest steam tramway locomotive in the world, built in 1884) you will be transported back to the time of the turn of the century - exact opening days and travel times at: www.museumstramway.at

More information

Coming from Bruck an der Mur via the B20 over the Seebergsattel and through Gußwerk. Always follow the course of the road.

Coming from St. Pölten via the B20 (Annaberg and Josefsberg) through Mitterbach and St. Sebastian. Always follow the course of the road.

Our starting point for the hike is the SOCAR gas station in Mariazell. Once we cross the road at the crosswalk, we reach the information board where we get an overview of the hike.

On a well-marked path we now walk along the Grünauer Kirchenweg (Feldbauerweg) to the settlement Teichmühle (district Rasing). Now we follow the signs to the left side of the road and walk partly in the forest, partly beside the road to the wayside shrine of the former hotel Marienwasserfall in Grünau. (In Grünau we can make a short side trip to the Marienwasserfall - approx. 15 - 20 minutes there and back). Now we branch off to the right and reach the Gretenalm via a forest path. From the Gretenalm to the Erlaufsee we hike next to the road along a forest path. Arrived at the Erlaufsee, a forest path leads us along the right shore of the lake, above the main road, along the entire lake. At the bathing area we can take a short rest.

We now continue along the foot/bike path to St. Sebastian and from St. Sebastian the last stretch on the Hans-Wertanek-Promenade to Mariazell.

The trail around Lake Erlauf is also passable in winter.

There are some Refreshment stops at the lake

Family hiking trail!

Tip: Along the path behind the former Hotel Marienwasserfall in Grünau, the Marienwasserfall falls over a rock wall into a natural pool, and then flows into the Salza as the Grünaubach in the Rasing. Walking time from the circular hiking trail to the Marienwasserfall: about 5 - 10 minutes

Here you can find a blog report about the Marienwasserfall by Fred Lindmoser!

Side trip to the Marienwasserfall!
