Zirbitzkogel via Lindersee

“The promising one”:
From the alpine idyll of Sabathy near St. Wolfgang, you hike on a beautiful loop past the Lindersee lake to the summit king of the Seetal Alps, the Zirbitzkogel. The way back is via the Rothaidenhütte. However, the tour can also be shortened depending on your stamina.

Enjoy a challenging but beautiful hike to the king of the Seetal Alps, the Zirbitzkogel. Several hotspots await you here. Right at the start, an impressive rock field awaits you near the unmanaged Linderhütte. Afterwards, the Lindersee offers a welcome place to recharge your batteries. On the Zirbitzkogel, the highest refuge awaits you, just a few meters from the summit cross. Here you can enjoy the stunning view over the edge of the Seetal Alps valley. On the descent, you can stop off at the Rothaidenhütte, which is a short detour, or finish off at the Sabathyhütte.

More information

In Obdach take the St. Wolfganger Straße in the direction of Mönchegg. Follow the road for about 7 km. At the fork before St. Wolfgang turn left and follow the signs towards Almidylle Sabathy. After a little over 4 km you reach the parking lot of the Almidylle Sabathy. The path is signposted throughout to the Almidylle Sabathy.

The tour starts at the parking lot of the Sabathyhütte, where you take hiking trail 316 past the Almrauschhütte to the unmanaged Linderhütte. If you continue along hiking trail 316, you pass the Lindersee lake and continue up through the Lindertal valley to the refuge on the Zirbitzkogel. From the refuge, it is only a few meters up to the summit cross, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding mountain landscape.

Descend in an easterly direction on hiking trail 320 to the junction with trail 46. From here, you reach hiking trail 47 via the Rothaidenhütte, which leads back to the Linderhütte. Take trail 316 back to the starting point. However, if you leave trail 320 at the wayside shrine in the flat section below the Zirbitzkogel ascent, you can take trail 322 directly to trail 47 (leaving the Rothaidenhütte on the right).

As a variant or extension option, you can join trail 316 below St. Wolfgang (at the junction of the access road to the Sabathyhütte). Here you go briefly downhill before it starts to climb at the stream. The trail soon splits into trail 316 and trail 322, the latter of which must be followed to this point on the descent if you have chosen this variant and wish to return to the starting point. The Rothaidenweg trail (no. 322), which continues all the way to the Zirbitzkogel, leads past the beautiful Maria in der Lärche.

Sufficient stamina is a basic requirement for this hike, even without the described extension. But you will be rewarded with wonderful views and a beautiful route.

On the route to the unmanaged Linderhütte on hiking trail 316/47, you will find an impressive stone field, which is also ideal for photos. Continue along hiking trail 316, passing the Lindersee lake and continuing up to the shelter on the Zirbitzkogel. From the refuge, it is only a few meters up to the summit cross, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding mountain landscape.
Descend eastwards on hiking trail 320 to the junction with trail 46, from where you return to trail 316 and the starting point via the Rothaidenhütten huts on hiking trail 47.
Sufficient stamina is a basic requirement for this hike. But you will be rewarded with wonderful views and a beautiful route.

For a conflict-free coexistence on alpine pastures and meadows it is important to observe a few rules, especially when traveling with dogs. (Source: www.sichere-almen.at - 06/2021)

  • Keep calm, do not frighten grazing animals!
  • Mother cows protect their calves. Avoid encounters between mother cows and dogs!
  • Always keep dogs under control and on a short leash. If an attack by a grazing animal is foreseeable: Immediately unleash!
  • Do not leave hiking trails on alpine pastures and meadows!
  • If grazing animals block the way, avoid them as far as possible!
  • When grazing animals approach: Stay calm, do not turn your back, avoid the animals!
  • Leave the grazing area quickly at the first sign of restlessness of the animals!Fences must be respected!
  • If there is a gate, use it, then close it well and cross the pasture quickly!
  • Treat the people working here, nature and the animals with respect!
A few tips for correct and fair behavior in the forest: (Source: www.bundesforste.at  6/2021)
  • Hikers should avoid visits to the forest about 1.5 hours before sunrise and after sunset, as wildlife is especially active during this time.
  • Plastic bottles, handkerchiefs, cigarette butts & Co have no place in the forest! Please make sure that you do not leave any trash in the forest.
  • Camping and making fire - is strictly forbidden in the forest!
  • In principle, each person is allowed to collect 2 kg of mushrooms and berries per day for personal use in the forest. It is only forbidden if the forest owner expressly forbids it.
