Sattelberge & Gösser from Passail

Open
The hike leads directly from Passail out to the Sattelberge and up to the striking Gösser with its magnificent views of the Schöckl and towards Weiz.
The Sattelberge lie to the south of Passail and shield the Passail basin from Weiz. The highest elevation of the Sattelberge is the Gösser with its "wall", which drops steeply towards the Raabklamm gorge. This karst mountain range is home to over 200 caves, the best-known show caves being the Grasslhöhle (the oldest show cave in Austria!) and the Katerloch. Until the middle of the 20th century, a small alpine dairy with alpine hut and inn was operated on the Gössersattel, which was then abandoned due to the poor water supply.

On this hike, the Gösser is hiked around via trail no. 18b, this section of the trail offers the most beautiful views, but also requires surefootedness. Please be careful, the rock here breaks off steeply! Otherwise, the trail leads along easy-to-walk farm and access paths and is suitable for the whole family.

Variation:From the Dürntalkreuz down to the Dürntalwirt and via the well-marked trail no. 764 to the district town of Weiz, the return journey to Passail is then by bus with the bus number 206 or with the SAM-Sammeltaxi.

More information

  • We start at the parking deck and walk in the direction of the market square, at the pharmacy we keep to the left and walk along the pavement for a while along the main road (B64).
  • At the crossroads with the signpost "Fischteiche" (fish ponds), we turn right and soon reach the two idyllically situated fish ponds.
  • The trail now continues out towards Hohenau, at the fork with a wayside cross we continue straight ahead and follow the signs "Haufenreith, Wachthaussattel".
  • Now we walk along trail no. 8 through the hamlet of Haufenreith, the trail now climbs slowly.
  • In Weizeben, we turn right after a beautiful farm with a cross in the garden (soon we also see another signpost on the left) and walk up towards the forest.
  • The forest path now leads steeply uphill and offers beautiful views back to Passail again and again along the way.
  • At the next junction, take a detour up to the left to the "Wachthaussattel" with a small chapel and benches for resting (trail no. 18, "Nasser Höhlenweg").
  • We go back to the crossroads and now take the path to the right out towards the "Sattelwegkreuz/Gösser".
  • From the "Lärchsattel" we have a beautiful first view in the direction of Weiz.
  • Soon you reach the "Sattelwegkreuz", a wayside cross with a beautiful inscription and a bench for resting.
  • Continue to the "Anerlbauerkreuz" cross, from where the "Gösserwand-Ringerl", trail no. 18b, leads out to the edge of the "Gösserwand".
  • The Gösserwand offers several magnificent views - first over Arzberg to the Schöckl and then out towards Weiz. Caution: the path is unsecured and the Gösserwand slopes steeply!
  • We now go downhill for a bit and can already see the "Dürntalerkreuz" with a trail sign and also a rest area. If you want to go all the way to Weiz, turn off here in the direction of "Dürntalwirt" (trail no. 18).
  • We complete the "Ringerl" until we reach the "Anerlbauerkreuz" again.
  • Now we always keep to the signposts "Haufenreith/Hohenau/Passail" and walk the same way back to Passail.
Back in Passail, several establishments await hungry hikers: Der Schrenk with regional dishes, the "Hexenstubn" pizzeria and the "Almcafe".
