Christmas market opening in Weiz
The opening of the Weiz Christmas Market - this year on 29 November - is celebrated every year with the traditional ‘switching on’ of the Christmas lights on Südtiroler Platz. As darkness falls over the square, all the Christmas lights are switched on for the festive opening. This moment makes many (children's) eyes light up and rounds off your visit to the Christmas market with the Christmas market offerings and Christmas music.
Long shopping night on the opening day
As part of the ‘long shopping night’ on Friday (Black Friday), 29 November, the participating businesses in Weiz town centre offer lots of great promotions and make shopping for Christmas presents in Weiz a pleasure. The shopping experience will be framed by live music ("Dixie-Factory") and angels strolling through the town centre, creating a Christmassy atmosphere in the shops and on the forecourts. The shopping pleasure is combined with the inviting atmosphere and numerous delicacies to drink and eat at the mulled wine stands, which are run by various associations and charitable organisations.
Christmas market in Weiz
Traditionally, visitors can expect a varied programme of events on the Advent weekends in Weiz. On the Advent weekends, the Christmas market takes place in the area of the Kunsthaus-Passage, Rathausgasse, Bismarckgasse, K&K-Passage and Südtiroler Platz in the beautiful glow of the Christmas lights. A wide range of arts and crafts, high-quality goods and delicious treats are on offer in an atmospheric setting. The Weiz clubs and charitable organisations also cater for their members, friends and visitors in the club hut village and throughout the market area.
Every Saturday in Advent, there is live music in the market area and at the two club huts and charity villages. On the last weekend, you can request your own special Christmas song from a DJ for a donation. The Weiz schools also take part in the Christmas market every Friday (e.g. children's choir, school band, circus school...). At the photo point in the K&K Passage on Saturdays between 10:00 and 14:00, you can capture your visit to the Weiz Christmas Market in pictures and have beautiful, Christmassy photos taken for your loved ones. The nativity scene with the life-size wooden figures on the main square, which is atmospherically placed in front of the Marian column and the large Advent wreath, is particularly popular. There is also a beautiful wooden nativity scene to admire in the Garden of Generations. Life-size snowmen are scattered throughout the town and watch the pre-Christmas hustle and bustle in the alleyways.
Carriage ride as an experience
On the Advent Saturdays from 14:00 - 19:00, an open carriage and a covered carriage with electric drive support will be in operation. This year, the closed carriage will once again feature the Weizer Kutschen-Weihnachts-Geschichte (Weizer Carriage Christmas Story), which deals with Christmas themes at various stations along the route. In addition, on 30 November between 14:00 and 19:00, you can admire lively attractions along the route during the carriage rides.
Attractive offer for children
Throughout Advent, there is a children's fairytale forest to admire in the Weberhaus courtyard. There are also replicas of various forest animals, which are atmospherically illuminated. Children can also take Christmas stories from the story tree and read them at home. For the youngest visitors, there is also a craft workshop for Christmas decorations in the Weberhaus area. On the first weekend of Advent, you can also create beautiful figurines from soapstone as gifts or beautiful accessories to take home.
- In addition to the Christmas craft workshop, the Children's Day on Saturday, 14 December 2024 also offers the puppet theatre ‘Piratensalat’ with Stefan Karch in the Weberhaus with a performance at 15:00 and 16:00.
- On Saturday, 21.12.2024, the Christkind will once again float down to Weiz's main square during the traditional Christkindlspiel, bringing the accompanying Christmas programme to a worthy close.
St Nicholas market and Krampus run
The traditional St. Nicholas Market of the Weiz City Fire Brigade will once again take place this year in Europa-Allee on Sunday, 1 December. Immediately after dark (from 16:00) we expect St Nicholas with his frightening Krampus. The traditional Krampus run at the Weizer Christkindlmarkt with over 200 Krampus with hand-carved masks takes place on 7 December in the Elingasse from 16:00.
