Winkler-Hermaden Winery
Kapfenstein
Long-lived wines with a focus on complexity and organic products from our own agriculture.
Biological-organic cultivated nature
The Winkler-Hermaden family winery is located on the slopes of the Kapfensteiner Kogel, an extinct volcano in the thermal and volcanic region of Styria. A total of about 40 hectares of vineyards are cultivated here - twelve of which are in Klöch from old holdings of the Gräflich Stürgkh'schen Weingut. In 2009, the decision was made to cultivate the entire area organically. This is intended to increase biodiversity in the vineyards on the one hand and to achieve even higher wine quality on the other.
The emphasis is on Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer and Burgundy varieties. The red wine varieties are dominated by Blauer Zweigelt and Merlot. In any case, the Winkler-Hermaden winery is one of the companies that helped red wine from southeastern Styria to become internationally known. Accordingly, a red wine share of 50 percent can still be found in the winery today. The special feature: the wood for the barrels is made of Kapfenstein oak and comes from their own forests! The Winkler-Hermaden family sees this as a very distinctive form of terroir.
Drachen-, Löwen- and the Long Cellar
Near the farmyard (Meierhof), about 60m below the castle, is the Löwenkeller (around 1800) (today in use as a wine cellar), which above the entrance shows a lion as a relief of red marble. While the Drachenkeller (1999) is primarily concerned with gentle grape processing and red wine fermentation, the Löwenkeller is used for white wine fermentation.
In the winery one has the possibility to taste and also to buy all wines available at the moment. The Meierhof also houses the Long Cellar, which is perfect for group tastings. In addition, it also hosts exhibitions and vernissages throughout the year.
