Hike via FIS bypass to the Bürgeralpe

Hike from the chairlift in St. Sebastian along the sugar meadow via the forest road FIS bypass to the summit of the Mariazeller Bürgeralpe.
The route via the FIS bypass is the fastest route from St. Sebastian to the Mariazell Bürgeralpe.

As it is a gravelled forest road, this route is particularly suitable for families with children.

Coming from Graz take the A9 Phyrnautobahn north, then S35 Brucker Schnellstraße and S6 Semmering Schnellstraße to Kapfenberg exit, then B20 (Mariazeller Bundesstraße) 49 km north (signpost).

Alternative: S6 to exit St. Marein and then over the Pogusch to Turnau and from Au on the B20 to Mariazell.

Coming from Salzburg take the Westautobahn A1 to exit Ybbs, then B25 to Scheibbs, from there two options:either B28 via Wastl am Wald to B20, then via Annaberg and Josefsbergor B25 further to Grubberg and then B71 via the newly expanded Zellerrain.

Coming from Vienna take the Westautobahn A1 to the exit St. Pölten SüdDann B20 (Mariazeller Bundesstraße) 76 km south, either via Annaberg and Josefsbergor in Freiland turn left from the B20 onto the B21 and drive via Hohenberg and St. Aegyd through the Halltal valley to Mariazell (sufficiently signposted).

Variant: Südautobahn A2 and S6 Semmering expressway to Mürzzuschlag, then via Neuberg and Mürzsteg on the B21 to Mariazell.

We start in St. Sebastian and walk along the road (along the sugar meadow) to the junction of the Rosenkranzweges. Here we keep left and come to the Sebastiani Holzknechthütte (closed). Then we hike on the forest road (FIS bypass in winter) up to the Bürgeralpe - past the mountain inn and on to the Erzherzog Johann lookout.
A visit to the adventure park at the summit is always a special experience for young and old.

By train from Graz main station to Bruck/Mur, change there to MVG bus line 172

Coming from Salzburg

ÖBB Westbahn to St. Pölten, then change to Mariazellerbahn

Coming from Vienna

Variant 1: Postbus from Vienna main station to Mariazell

Variant 2: ÖBB main station to St. Pölten, then change to the Mariazellerbahn

Variant 3: ÖBB main station to Baden, then change to the Postbus.
