Stage 16 From Glacier to Wine North Route Seewiesen - Veitsch Graf Meran Haus

The Veitsch is considered one of the most beautiful mountains in Hochsteiermark and also a true flower mountain like the Hochschwab. Today's stage of the hiking route "From glacier to wine" leads us steadily uphill over alpine pastures and in between shady forests - a total of almost 1,400 meters of ascent await us - to the Graf-Meran-Haus, wonderfully located just below the summit.

Not only a beautiful panoramic mountain awaits us at the stage destination, but also one of the most important bases for all pilgrims on their way to Mariazell, the largest place of pilgrimage in Central Europe. But even at the beginning we may encounter pilgrims who are on the Mariazell Founders' Way, which leads from the monastery of St. Lambrecht in the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park to Mariazell, and who also choose Seewiesen as a stage stop. In 1157, the abbot of St. Lambrecht Abbey sent Brother Magnus out with a statue of the Virgin Mary to do pastoral work. An insurmountable rock blocked his way, whereupon the rock split and cleared the way. Magnus placed the statue on a tree stump and built a "cell" (monk's dwelling). Since then, this place is called Mariazell. And we meet one of the most famous Marian paths on the Veitsch, the Styrian Mariazell Path, which starts in the Schilcherland, where the Carinthian Mariazell Path also joins.

We also move here on a stage of the circular tour BergZeitReise, which leads through the wildly romantic mountain landscape of Hochsteiermark.

More information

Detaillierte Informationen zur Anreise finden Sie hier.

From Seewiesen (Tourist Information Tel. +43 664 3548485) we first pass the long-distance hiking monument to the Seebergalm, where after a little more than 2 km the Almgasthof Seebergalm (Tel. +43 3863 24114) awaits us with a stopover tip, but also an overnight alternative to the Seeberghof and the Alpengasthof Schuster in Seewiesen. Here the trail branches off to the right to take us through the Lappental valley to the Göriacher Alm. The hut of the same name, run by the Strobl family (+43 3863 2192 or +43 650 8272834), is open during the grazing season and also offers overnight accommodation with rooms and campsites. The further way leads us past an old hunting lodge to the Turnauer Alm with its refuge (Tel. +43 664 73792826), which is a popular meeting place for hikers and mountain enthusiasts from the region, who are always well catered for by the landlady Rosi Strauß and her family.

From alp to alp it goes here, one could think. And it is truly the case, because after a few kilometers the Rotsohlalm with the Nikolokreuz welcomes us. The Halterhütte, run by Johann Breidler (Tel. +43 664 2716463), with its 20 camp beds, is also an extremely popular stopover for Mariazell pilgrims who like to have it really cozy and rustic. From here, the path now leads us further in the direction of Graf-Meran-Haus, our stage destination. Important: please make a reservation in advance at the Graf-Meran-Haus (Tel. +43 664 1513220) due to the large number of visitors!

If the Graf-Meran-Haus is fully booked, we take the path slightly downhill to the Alpengasthof Scheikl (Tel. +43 3856 2349 or +43 676 3957362), which is known for its home cooking and wonderful location at the foot of the Veitsch (Tourist Information Tel. +43 699 1738517), and also offers overnight accommodations. A refreshment is also good for an overnight stay at the Alpengasthof Scheikl, because the first 2 km or so await us with an ascent in comfortable serpentines with just over 600 meters of altitude gain to the Graf-Meran-Haus (Tel. +43 664 1513220). Here we have a breathtaking panoramic view in the direction of the Mürztal and the Fischbacher Alps, which will be on the program in a few days on the hiking route "From Glacier to Wine". An impressive experience that we immediately forget the efforts of the ascent.

Note: If we stay overnight at Alpengasthof Scheikl, the next day starts with an ascent, but the stage to Neuberg an der Mürz is long, but leads us steadily downhill.
