Kurzvariante BergZeitReise Bruck an der Mur - Turnau - Hochschwab

Some time ago, a few hiking enthusiasts from Hochsteier had the idea to combine the already existing hiking trails between the historic old town of Bruck an der Mur, the Mürztal, Turnau and the Hochschwab to a multi-day hike. Unintentionally, this resulted in a short version of the Hochsteirische BergZeitReise, which is presented here.
From the historic old town of Bruck an der Mur, the route leads over the western Fischbach Alps to the Mürztal valley. From there the trail leads over the Pogusch with the famous Steirereck to Turnau, the gateway to the Hochschwab.

From Turnau the trail takes us across the alpine pastures to the Hochschwab mountains.

Finally, the ascent of the 2,277m high Hochschwab peak is on the program.

We start stage 1 in front of the historically unique gothic Kornmesserhaus in the town center of Bruck an der Mur and hike via the Himmelwirt (up to here road and access possibility from Bruck an der Mur) and the Almgasthaus Hutterer up to the Rennfeld with its unique panorama. There you will find the Rennfeld - Schutzhaus, our first possibility to spend the night.

The next day we descend from Rennfeld to Frauenberg (worth seeing pilgrimage church Maria Rehkogel) and reach the Mürztal near Graschnitz (large riding stable in the castle Graschnitz). Here it is now necessary to walk, without markings, through the two villages of St. Marein and St. Lorenzen im Mürztal, in order to reach the hiking trail to the Pogusch on the opposite side of the valley near the parish church of St. Lorenzen, which is marked again from here on (large hiking overview board at the parish church). In St. Lorenzen and in St. Marein there are several possibilities for overnight stays.

Our ascent to the Pogusch begins at the above-mentioned hiking overview board, whereby a large part of our path is identical to the well-known Bründlweg. On the Pogusch itself, the Steirereck restaurant is one of the culinary showpieces of Hochsteiermark, which is so rich in top gastronomy.

From the Pogusch, our path then leads along a forest path to the Schwabenberg (lift area, beautiful viewpoint). From here we descend, partly crossing the ski slopes, to Turnau, our next overnight stop.

From Turnau we start near the worth seeing Jakobus church to the steep and hearty ascent to the Osterer Alm. After about 2 - 3 hours of walking we have reached this and immediately afterwards the Turnauer Hochanger - a panoramic peak of the first rank. Here we can overlook our entire Hochschwabanstieg, which awaits us on the 5th tour day.

Now, after a short descent from the Hochangergipfel we stand in front of the picturesque Göriacher Alm and about 45 minutes walk downhill from the same is our night's lodging on the Seebergalm or in Seewiesen (from the Seebergalm another 45 minutes).

Today one of the most beautiful mountain hikes in Styria is on our tour program. From Seewiesen we first walk leisurely past the Erzherzog Johann monument on a wide forest path and almost level to the so-called Lettanger (material cable car station of the Voisthalerhütte). From here the path becomes steeper and narrower and takes us to the left, past the unmanaged Florlhütte, to the striking Franzosenkreuz, which was erected here to commemorate the retreat of the local population during the French wars under Napoleon.

A short downhill passage and immediately afterwards again steeply uphill - so we are soon in front of the hospitable Voisthalerhütte.

Always in the direction of the west we cross the upper Dullwitz. Suddenly the mighty Hochschwab south face rises in front of us and we have to leave the high valley to the right.

Across the wide plateau (be careful in fog!) we follow the pole marking and soon reach the Schiestlhaus.

Now it is not far and after about 20 minutes of walking (calculated from the Schiestlhaus) we stand on one of the most famous peaks of Styria and at the same time also at the highest point of the entire BergZeitReise.

The way back takes place until Seewiesen on the ascent path, whereby an additional overnight stay at the Schiestlhaus or at the Voisthalerhütte is recommended.

The return to Bruck an der Mur is by public bus (bus stop in Seewiesen, several connections daily) or by cab.

The historic old town of Bruck an der Mur is worth a visit in itself. The nearby Oberkapfenberg Castle should also be visited. In the Mürzral, the oldest church in the Mürztal is located directly on the hiking trail in St. Lorenzen. On the Pogusch, a culinary institution of Styria awaits with the Steirereck inn, and the nearby Bründlweg also runs along our path.

Turnau / Seewiesen is home to the Leonhard Church, the "Styrian Heiligenblut", and Hochschwab is an alpine hiking experience in itself.
