Jägersteig circular hike over the Patschagipfel (Weizklamm)

The Jägersteig circular hike leads along the Jägersteig above the Weizklamm gorge, with a subsequent ascent via the Patschasattel to the Patscha summit.

Note: The described round tour requires surefootedness and is only for experienced hikers! The connecting passage between the Jägersteig and the Patscha hiking trail leads over steep, partly pathless terrain with very sparse markings. For route finding, the use of Outdooraktiv or Alpenvereinaktiv is therefore recommended!

The circular hike has something to offer for every hiking enthusiast. Starting with the hike of the Jägersteig above the Weizklamm gorge, you have great views, steep rock faces that are partly secured with ropes and - if you want to extend the tour - even a suspension bridge that you can cross.

Note: The suspension bridge is not directly on the described route, but can be crossed by a short diversions (descent and ascent on the same path to the original starting point). Certainly a highlight.

More information

The district capital of Weiz is located in eastern Styria and is very easy to reach via the A2 from Vienna (approx. 2 hrs) and from Graz (approx. 30 min).
  • Arrival from Vienna and Graz: On the A2 from Vienna, take motorway exit 161 / Gleisdorf West in the direction of B54 / B64. Follow the B65 / Gleisdorfer Bundesstraße until you reach the B54 / Wechselbundesstraße. At the roundabout take the second exit to the B64 / Rechberg-Bundesstraße. After about 15 km you will reach the district capital Weiz.
  • Arriving from Graz via the main road: take Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai and Wickenburggasse to Jahngasse / B67a. Follow the B72 to Weiz and take the exit towards Weiz -West.

From Weiz, follow the B64 in the direction of Passail. The Jägersteig car park is marked in large letters and is located shortly after Naas before the Weizklamm gorge on the right-hand side.

Routeplanner

  • We start with the hike of the Jägersteig above the Weizklamm gorge, where we can enjoy great views, steep rock faces that are partly secured with ropes and - if we want to extend the tour - even a suspension bridge that can be crossed.
  • Note: The suspension bridge is not directly on the described route, but can be crossed by a short diversions (descent and ascent on the same path to the original starting point). Certainly a highlight.
  • Then it's time for the ascent to the Patschasattel. This part leads up to the Patschasattel on a partly steep and trackless terrain with often loose scree. This section is sparsely marked with red dots, so we recommend using Outdooraktiv or Alpenvereinaktiv.
  • Arriving at the top of the hill, the Patschasattel, with its fantastic view of Passail and Weiz, we meet the Patscha hiking trail, which then leads directly to the Patscha summit.
  • At the summit we have the opportunity for a rest with a view to St. Kathrein am Offenegg.
  • The descent is then via the trail to the Vogelhütte and from there then via forest and meadow fields back to the starting point.

Take a snack with you and enjoy it at the Patschasattel or on the benches at the summit of the Patscha.

Timetables and travel information can be found at Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) or at Verkehrsauskunft Verbundlinie.

For local transportation we recommend the SAM-Sammeltaxi Oststeiermark.

There is a free car park at the starting point of the tour.
