Stage 25 From Glacier to Wine North Route Almenland Brandlucken - Anger

From the Almo to the apple. This stage of the hiking route "From Glacier to Wine" takes us from the idyllic alpine and forest landscape of the Almenland Nature Park to Anger, the entrance to the apple country, the largest apple-growing area in Austria. The tour is one of the more leisurely stages of the long-distance hiking trail that takes us from the Dachstein to the wine country, although the descent of almost 800 meters in altitude into the Feistritz Valley should not be underestimated.

On the route lies the Rauchstubenhaus, which provides insights into the way of life and culture of the mountain farmers and craftsmen of yesteryear. In the Rauchstube, meat is still smoked and cooked over an open fire as it was in the past. The old furnishings, tools of the farmers, shingle and thatchers, coopers, shoemakers, tailors and weavers as well as old paintings and documents give us an idea of the culture of life in those days. A total of over 300 exhibits tell of the joys and sorrows of the old days.

Another highlight welcomes us directly in Anger: the Feistritztalbahn. Travel like in the old days on one of the most scenic routes in Austria. The narrow-gauge line runs from Weiz through the Feistritz Valley via Anger and Koglhof to Birkfeld in Joglland. During the ride, you feel transported back to an era when life was more leisurely and quiet. The Feistritztalbahn has been snorting tirelessly through the region for around 100 years. And during the leisurely journey through the green hills, the orchards, the lush meadows and forests, there are countless little details to discover that you wouldn't even notice on a quick ride.

More information

Detaillierte Informationen zur Anreise finden Sie hier.

From the Brandlucken in the Almenland Nature Park, we first hike south to the Schönes Kreuz crossroads. Here we keep to the left in the direction of Hohen Zetz, with its 1,264 m on the local mountain of the Angerer. On the way is also the refuge Eibisberg, which is open daily except Tuesday (Tel. +43 3179 8332). Before reaching the summit of the Hoher Zetz, our stage of the hiking route "From Glacier to Wine" branches off to the left, but we should not miss the few meters to the Hoher Zetz, because the small rest area around the summit cross already gives us great views of the landscape of our next stages, which lead us through the apple country into the Pöllauer Tal Nature Park and into the historic town of Hartberg.

Back on our main path, we now begin the descent into the Feistritz Valley. Leading in serpentines we reach the Rauchstubenhaus (Tel. +43 3175 2460), which must be visited. Further on we come to the village of Anger, which lies nestled between orchards, fields and forests in the heart of the Feistritz Valley. Numerous beautifully preserved houses, the market place as well as the imposing church are witnesses of the over 650-year history of this cultural and economic center in the Upper Feistritz Valley. And: in Anger we are already greeted by the first Buschenschank (wine taverns), which are so characteristic of the culture of life in Styria's wine country and are also at home in the Pöllauer Tal Nature Park, our destination on the next stage.

In the Thermen- & Vulkanland region of Styria, Eastern Styria and Southern and Western Styria, the GenussCard opens the door to over 200 excursion destinations when you stay overnight in one of the approximately 100 GenussCard partner establishments. Countless of these GenussCard excursion destinations, ranging from culinary manufactories to bathing lakes and museums, are located directly on the hiking route "From Glacier to Wine".
