The once important castle complex lies East of the town of Voitsberg. The oldest and most interesting part is the five-storey, crenulated keep which sits at the highest point of the castle.
The castle was built in the 16th century by Earl Herberstein as magnificently equipped living quarters. Archduke Johann inherited the ruins in 1817. In 1989 just as it was left to go to ruin the charitable children’s and youth organisation ‘Licht im Leben‘ bought the historical fortification. Since then numerous preservation measures have been taken. Since 1993 with the support of the castle association ‘Krems in der Steiermark‘. The charming ambience of the historical walls is an ideal location for cultural events as well as school and holiday projects. Viewings are available by appointment.
