Schwarzensee - Impression #1

Schwarzensee

Naturpark Sölktäler

Nature Park Sölktäler

The Schwarzensee is the largest mountain lake of the Niederen Tauern and is located in the Kleinsölker Obertal, the Schwarzenseebachtal. It lies at the beginning of the valley and is accompanied on the left and right by steep mountain flanks.

The surrounding forests are dominated by spruce. Blackberries, the white-flowered wood sorrel and the primal lycopod thrive in their shade. The alpine pastures in the south and north of the lake are much more colourful. Here the blue stalkless gentian, the purple wig flake flower, the yellow-flowered arnica and the intensely fragrant two-leaf forest hyacinth bloom.

The grass frog lives mainly in the south of the lake, around the wet ponds. In the flower-rich tall shrubs along the way, the pretty, red-coloured Kaismantel, the Bergweißling and the Mohrenfalter - all butterflies - find their food. Conspicuous dragonfly species are the great king dragonfly and the peat mosaic dragonfly. The lake itself is the habitat for brown trout, rainbow trout, char, lake trout and minnow.

We reach the lake by an easy walk, from the Breitlahnhütte, along the hiking trail 786. An unmarked trail and the Harmeralm make a round trip around the lake possible.
