More information
Drive along the S35 from Bruck/Mur or the A9 to the Deutschfeistritz/Peggau junction.
Whether you start from Bruck an der Mur or from the state capital of Graz, the market town of Peggau can be reached effortlessly from the north and the south via the idyllic R2 cycle path along the banks of the Mur. Or you can arrive with the S-Bahn 1 train. The tour leads from Peggau onto the Tanneben, a lime massif between Peggau and Semriach. With its troughs, sinkholes and about 200 caves discovered so far, this karst area is a paradise for speleologists! First, take the R2 along Brucker Begleitstrasse (L121) to the south. Shortly before the motorway exit, turn left up into Hieningstrasse in the direction of Semriach. After the Draxlerkogel mountain, there is a possible detour well worth taking to Hüblerhof farm, whose splendid flowers have won prizes several times at the Styrian Decorative Flowers Competition (gold in 2018!). The path continues up to the Taschen, where you can take a break and enjoy the magnificent panorama. On the market square of Semriach there are numerous restaurants, cafes and pastry shops, where you can reward your efforts. Rehydrated and strengthened, ride along the Lurbach stream in the direction of Pöllau Lur, and soon you get to your next possible detour, namely the main attraction of this tour: Lurgrottenstrasse road branches off to the left to the Semriach approach to the Lurgrotte grotto. The largest active river cave in Austria meanders over 6 km from Semriach through the mountain to Peggau. Follow the Lurbach stream underground and be amazed at the bizarre stalactite formations. You`ll also easily manage to cool down in the mighty caverns and gorges. Pöllaustrasse then leads to Gasthof Häuserl im Wald, an inn where you can reward yourself with refreshments: after all, you`ve mastered about half of the route already! Then continue on the Schöneggstrasse over the Pfannberg mountain to Frohnleiten. The "pearl of the Mur Valley", as Frohnleiten is also called, is known for its historic skyline of houses on the banks of the Mur and does not lack culinary and cultural offerings either. Then it's time to head home. The main road (Grazer Strasse/ L121) takes you back via Ungersdorf and Badl, and past the Lurgrotte Peggau grotto, to the starting point of the tour.
In the Peggau Lurgrotte grotto you will encounter the skeleton of a cave bear, a mammoth tusk and plants that seem to grow without daylight!
From leisurely riding along the Murradweg cycle path to more strenuous summit tours – OberGraz makes it easy for you to get on your bike. Cyclists without a car can arrive comfortably in the region by train. The well-frequented S1 train connection between Graz and Bruck/Mur makes OberGraz easily accessible by public transport.
